What is Lichen Sclerosus?

Lichen Sclerosus is an inflammatory skin condition characterised by the appearance of white pearly patches of thin skin. It can affect both men and women, and most commonly impacts the genitals and anus, though it can appear on other areas of the body.
While lichen sclerosus isn't contagious or life-threatening, it can be very uncomfortable and distressing, and may make things like sex or exercise more difficult.
Symptoms of Lichen Sclerosus
In women, lichen sclerosus manifests as white, shiny, thin patches of skin on the vulva, that may appear slightly crinkled in texture. These patches can be itchy, painful, or sensitive, leading to discomfort during daily activities, intercourse, or urination. In around 30% of cases, the anus is also affected.
Who Can Be Affected by Lichen Sclerosus?
While lichen sclerosus can affect anyone, it is most commonly diagnosed in postmenopausal women and young girls who have not yet reached puberty.
