8 SCAR REMOVAL TIPS

Look no further for the most natural scar removal tips, your body desperately craves.

Here at NESSA we celebrate the warrior scars that brought you into motherhood, it’s a pretty great reminder of what your incredible body did.

Everyone feels differently about their scars, and that’s ok. It can be hard to accept the changes to your body has gone through.

Whether you love or hate your new stripes, whatever scar you own, your skin needs nourishment & hydration.

Understanding the Science Bit! 👩‍🔬

Collagen is the main protein found in the skin, when we get a scar, new collagen forms in the scar tissue, this new collagen is slightly inferior to ‘normal’ skin in its functioning. However it does the job. The scar tissue is tough, not as elastic or supple, and there are no hair follicles in it.

Different remedies and results vary from individual, a lot depends on genetics, how you got the scar, and how long you have had it.

The sooner you treat the scar, the better chance you have of it fading. Keeping the wound moisturised from the very beginning is the best way to speed up healing and minimise scarring. – listen up C-Section warriors!

8 home scar removal / care tips

Coconut oil 🥥

We love Coconut oil, it’s an amazing natural product. The fatty acid content of virgin, cold pressed coconut oil makes it a great barrier to protect and lock moisture & nourishment into your scar.

How to use it: Massage a few drops of coconut oil into the scar 2-3 times a day.

 Sugar Scrub 🌺

Exfoliating with natural scrubs is great for scar healing for two reasons. First of all, vigorous massage will stimulate blood flow. Secondly, sugar will remove the dead skin, flattening the scar and allowing new skin to form.

How to use it: Combine ½ a cup of brown sugar with 2 ⅓ cup of coconut oil and two tablespoons of almond oil. Massage onto the affected area for minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Don’t scrub too hard on new scars!

 Lemon Juice 🍋

Lemon juice acts as a natural bleach to help fade dark scars. It has a drying effect so make sure to apply moisturiser / coconut oil directly afterwards.

How to use it: Squeeze the juice from a fresh lemon and apply it directly to the scar with your fingers. Leave for 10 minutes and then wash off. Repeat daily

 Cucumber 🥒

Cucumber is a neutral, cooling plant, which can hydrate your scar without causing allergies and irritation.

How to use it: Peel a cucumber, cut the seeds out and blend it in a food processor to make a paste. Apply to the scar and leave for 20 minutes before washing off with cool water. Repeat twice daily.

 Honey 🍯

Honey is an amazing natural moisturiser. It’s sticky texture means it remains on the wound for a long time and some honeys (like Manuka) even have antibacterial properties.

How to use it: Apply a thin layer of honey to the scar and cover with a light dressing. Change at least daily.

(Honey is not Vegan)

 Avocado 🥑

Avocado is full of nourishment for your body and your skin too. It’s healthy fats create a protective barrier to allow moisture to penetrate through your scar.

How to use it: Mash a ripe avocado and apply a thin layer to the scar to create a hydrating mask. Leave it for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Sunscreen or Cover Up! 😎

PLEASE KEEP YOUR SCARS OUT OF THE SUN! The skin on your scar is sensitive, and will darken easily. Cover up or use sunscreen, and you can help prevent  burns or unwanted melanin making it more visible.

Drink Lots of Water 🌊

Most of the techniques up till this point have emphasised moisturising your scar from the outside. However, moisturising from the inside is helpful too. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your skin soft and elastic. Try to avoid caffeine and aim for around 2-4 liters of water a day for best results

Good luck! And be patient, all warrior scars are different, and its all about finding what works for you. Any treatment you try, give it 2-3 months.
